I have a 96 lt4 which I was changing the oil in last night, and I noticed a good amount of trans fluid around the drain plug. I didn't have what looked to be a huge torx to tighten it. Are these prone to leaks at the plug? do you replace it like an oil pan plug? I have been searching all the threads on doing a drain and fill and it doesn't seem too complicated. I have never done it and I don't want to cause damage. How easily do the drain and fill plugs come out? I think I'll drain the fill plug first. It seems like it would suck to drain it and then not be able to fill it. I always seem to run into a snag. also, do you flush it with anything or just refill. I am guessing there a filter in there but I don't think I want to mess with that. The car just hit 100k. It does shift fine but I would like to get some fresh fluid in there. Thanks
after looking at a million more threads I am now a bit worried about changing the trans fluid. I don't have any service records for trans fluid service from the PO. The car has 100k on it and I have been reading where guys think that changing old fluid will loosen up sludge that may be holding things together and then you have a problem. Right now, the trans seems to work fine, I just thought that I would learn another skill and keep my car in good repair. How concerned should I be about changing the fluid. There is know way I can change the trans if I screw that up. Thanks
at the very minimum, at least check the oil level; especially since you "noticed agood amount of trans fluid aroung the drain plug".
personally I would do a complete drain and refill; there are no internal filters; however, there are very expensive gears, bearings and syncro's, none of which benefit from operating in old oil.
The ZF trannies were a non-servicable item. If they broke or went bad they were just replaced and service manuals did not list fluid change intervals. I think I read where it was suggested 15K or so.
I guess I'll take a chance and change it out. seems a lot of guys have noticed a big difference in shifting after putting in new fluid. Thanks for the replys

You won't be "taking a chance" changing the fluid. Remove the drain plug, let it drain for a while, put the plug back in, fill it up through the fill plug. Only good can happen.
