I've read the same thing before too, and not sure how that old wives tale got started.
But if you had to remove the key every time before you could start the car again, GM would have had a lot of pissed off customers.
Example:
Go to a drive in like Sonic. Park, shut engine off (leave key in ignition) and order.
When finished, start car up and leave.
Key never left the ignition switch.
