I just put on a set of long tube headers on my 85 vette, now that the headers are on, no exhaust shop is going to touch it cause I took the EGR/AIR equip off, so....is there anyone who makes a new y pipe that can bolt up to the flanges on the headers and bolt to the cat?
There is noo need for an exhaust place to open the hood to replace the Y pipe
I reccomend you do the hood latch cable mod (wire around latch release to windsheild wiper area) then you can disconnect the hood release under the dash and tell em oh the hood is jammed the cable broke .... if they cant see the air is not connected it should not worry them
yea I cant stand it...i could take my 55 pro street f100 and get exhaust done with no problems, but just because the newer cars have all this emission crap on it they say they cant touch it, he did say he would do it if it had a cat on it, but thats kind of defeating the purpose of headers, so i think i might take it to the shop and have them hook it up, then bring it home and then gut the cat out, i was just checking to see if anyone made a y pipe that bolts to the headers and cat
What kind of headers did you put on? Does the manufacturer make a Y pipe?
that's the route I did many moons ago......had one company supply the entire kit from the LT headers back to the tailpipes as a unit that works together (including front and year y's and the hi-flow cat).....or you might continue searching a shop that will fab up an exhaust for you...after all you are not asking them to remove emission equipment..
Either make a cardboard template for them to copy with pipe or if you have a friend that has a flatbed trailer or race car trailer take the plates off it and tell them it is for off road use.
If you have a name brand set of headers (Hookers or ARH, etc.), they make a y pipe to bolt onto your collectors. I have taken my original y pipe and had them cut and spliced onto collectors. When all else fails, you can buy a mig and watch the video.
I put on hedman heads, the exhaust shop said he'll do it if I use a cat, no problem, kind of defeats the purpose of putting on headers, but ok...so I figured I could find myself a y pipe that bolted up to the headers and to the oem cat (4 bolt, front and back), but no luck...I found a hedman y pipe that does bolt up to the headers, but it does not bolt up to the cat, it's a slip in that requires band clamps....so I could not go that route. So.....if I get him to do a true dual exhaust, what cats would you all recommend using with a dual exhaust?
I had an existing dual exhaust setup on my 86, and I wanted bullet cats. The muffler guy cut out the cats only to find out they were empty. I wanted him to weld them back on, and he wouldn't. He did weld on the bullet cats for me though. Hey, any exhaust is better than no exhaust.
Remove the license plates and trailer the car to a different shop. Tell them you are building an "off-road" race car and this is one of the first mods.
Federal law prohibits the removal of an existing and working catalytic converter. A shop that gets caught can face a 5-figure fine If you intend on running a main cat, any good muffler shop should be able to bend some pipe that will connect the headers to a Y-pipe and then to the main cat. They should even be able to build a Y-pipe.
And if you don't have to have the car smogged, the "off-road" plan should even get a shop to build a true dual exhaust system. Going this way, I would definitely recommend an X-pipe installed where the cat was located. That will help bunches with reducing resonance inside the car.
I have a brand new y-pipe that is ceramic coated with the four bolt flange for the cat.slip on ends for the headers. Im looking for a y-pipe with 3 slip on ends, would like the ceramic coated one, I may sell my y-pipe or trade, mine is a 2 1/2 pipe. thanks John.
