The LT4 hotcam kit came with valve shims. I assume you use them.
The documentation talks about the differences between pre88 heads and post88 heads. But it doesn't seem to say what you should do differently between the two. I have a 92 LT1.
Anyway, do I use the shims or leave them out on a 92 Lt1? Seems like the shim goes on the bottom of the spring as the retainer doesn't mate with it.
Sounds like this item does indeed go beneath the spring-probably more to protect the aluminum head from the moving valve spring. My LT4 heads were this way as well.
I was hoping the shim issue would be self-evident once I took the valve covers off. I have everything else tore down, intake, timing chain cover, but had left the covers on for the moment.
I just ordered the Cloyes roller chain for overnight delivery from Summit. After reading the hotcam instructions and it did indicate that the stock chain would not hold up with the higher RPM you can get with the roller rockers.
Cloyes was recommended quite a bit, but I never read that it was a must. I almost replaced with just the stock chain. I'm glad I'm taking it slow.
Anywhay thanks! I feel better now I won't be surprised with the shims.
Jay, can you post the part number of the kit or part numbers of the parts included in the kit for this mod? I'm interested in installing the same. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out and how it performs.
Thanks,

I used the shims from the kit. They looked a little thinner than the stock ones. I wanted the correct installed spring height to be correct. The order of installation is shim, valve guid seal, spring, retainer, and then the locks. Hope this helps.
You can't go wrong with Jeff Kopp (18CarFan on the forum) at Superior Chevy. I don't recall what his price was as I spoke to him last year about it.
But the cost of the cam kit is just the begining. Add in a new Mezier electric waterpump, opti, wires, cloyes timing chain kit, and gaskets, it adds up real fast. I bet I am into it for $1200-$1300 bucks. *edit* I almost forgot the $350 for the chip! My wife is going to kill me :)
My vette has close to 40K on the clock, I'm so ready to do some serious mods. I'm really ready to pull the heads off an go with some really hot ones along with a cam an porting & polishing the intake and of course a 52mm TB & headers. Thanks for the info. HHUUUUMMMM lots to mull over. Good luck with your mods, keep us posted on the outcome.
Remember nothing good come easy, there is always a price to pay!!! Hope your wife recovers soon though.
