Steering noise?

Steering noise?
Hello,
I am considering buying a 1993 Coupe with 91,000 miles for $7,000. Everything looks good except there is a knocking type of noise when you turn the steering wheel back and forth.
There is plenty of fluid in the power steering reservoir and the car drives and steers fine. There are no leaks in the system that I can see. there is no slop in the steering, just the noise.
Does anybody have any ideas what this could be? I don't want to let the car get away and I don't mind fixing this but I don't want to buy a car that I will have to spend a fortune on right away.
I assume that worst case scenario would be replacing the steering rack. Does anybody have any idea what this would cost?
