Today my check engine lit up on my 88. When I checked it it came up as 36. I went to the Haynes Book, and there is no CODE 36. It goes from 35 - 41.
Anyone know what this is. I disconnected the batt, and re-started and it went away. :flag
code 36 is the high resolution signal from the opti (at least that's what the 92 helms shows)...I'm not sure about your year. The car will run with the signal missing as it references crank shaft position.
Again all this is coming out of helms 92.....The ecm sends a ref. signal on the high resol. ckt.430. It toggles between 0 and 5 v as the cam turns. an open or ground on that circuit will throw code 36. that's where I'd start. Maybe someone will jump in here with the exact ref. to your year.

Re: CODE 36 What's that?? (Triple Black 88)
Code 36 for an L98 is MAF burn off problem.
First thing to check is the two relays behind the battery on the firewall. The one farthest outboard is the MAF burn-off relay, the one inboard is the MAF power relay.
Most folks just change both. I know there was some controversy on the correct part numbers for each, so best is to go with GM replacements unless you can confirm the right aftermarket numbers.
