Default heater Water Control Valve Replacement

Has anyone replaced their heater Water control Valve that is located next to the firewall on the passenger side of the car?????

Mine is bad on my 86 and was wanting to know if there was any tricks to replacing it, or if it was pretty much straightforward.....

Do you need any special tools, or can just a set of sockets and screwdrivers get the job done??????

The mechanic wants $150 to do the work, I'm looking at saving that money for other things......

Thanks for your assistance......

I wish I knew. Mine acted up a couple of times last fall. I don't see how the thing comes out of there. Also is that a wire, thin cable, or a thin vacuum line that controls it. I hope somebody answers your post cause I'm in the dark too.

Hate to sound dumb, but, how do you know if the valve is bad. I am asking because hot air will not blow out of my heater but the heater core has no sign of being bad and the air conditioner works fine.

You can do it man.... simple hand tools on 86. that's a vacuum line. Mine was acting up wouldn't give any heat until you opened hood and helped that darn thing along. I took it out and cleaned best I could and sprayed some lube on it and it worked better for a while, but it is on the list to be replaced. You will have no problem replacing it, just 5 hose clamps, 1 vacuum line and one mounting bolt. Good Luck

I took the car to the shop cause it was leaking coolant by the valve, they pressurized the system and found that the valve was leaking.

Bump...because it seems I'm having the same problem on my '89 and it looks like this might be the culprit. However, nothing in the manual about removal replacement. Valve appears to be integral with the heater hose with no hose clamps in sight  What's the trick?

Jim,

The water control valve on my 86 (the same one is used for 85-87) has two metal tubes running past it. The tubes close to the firewall are about 2-3" long, and the the tubes running towards the motor are about 1' - 1 1/2' long......

I believe that when you actually look at the replacement part, you will understand how to change it.......

The manual that I have says to completely drain the coolant system. I only recommend this if you need to flush your coolant system anyway.... I just started disconnecting the 5 hoses, 1 vacume (spelling) line, and two bolts, and out she came.... Lost a little bit of antifreeze, but not as much as I would if I would have drained the whole system. ( I also just flushed the system 2 weeks prior).

This is really a simple procedure, and I had mine done in about 1 hour. The hardest part was getting the old hoses off.

If you have any more quetions just let me know.

Todd

You should feel the tube beyond the valve with the heater off. The tube should not be hot, if it is, the valve is bad. Simple to replace, just a bunch of new hose clamps and I would suggest you change the hoses while you are at it.

No control valve on an '89. Coolant is always flowing through the core and the heater is controlled by the position of the temperature door. To verify that the door is working, remove the blower control module on the evaporator housing and note the position of the door at full cold and then at full heat. If it's moved, it's working. Otherwise, the core is probably plugged. If so, coolant flows over the top, but not through the core. You can try backflushing with water or compressed air. If that doesn't do it, time to replace.
