When the aluminum L98 heads first came out...they were the 'HOT' ticket, because you could buy a brand new ready to run complete set from GM for $700-800, and they outperformed most cast iron heads. They definitely outperform the L83 head.
Since then, GM has came out with a few better flowing mods of the L98 head, and the LT-1 is even better than that. This is not even starting to get into aftermarket head performance...Brodix has what I think is the BEST performing heads on earth...but some would argue others are, so I guess it all depends on what your looking for.
Now: If you want to put on the L98 head in place of the L83 head, it would reason the 58 CC chamber volume of the L98 would make a differnce in compression over the 68 CC volume of the L83 head ( If that is the right volume for the L83, but I'm not dead sure about that number ). The real question is...Do you want higher compression? I have such a hard time with fuel quality...I wish I had a lower compression engine sometimes.
Thanks for the information, I can see this is going to take some study.
 I have been looking for a month now.
My advice? Read everything you can. Dump out all the information because it is false. You will never find 3 people who agree on anything and if they do agree, it is only because it is the only brand they have tried.
Believe me, it is turning out that way. If you are on a tight budget, then it makes it even worse. -Matt-
l83 heads are 76cc the same as 85 l98 heads
Yes it can be done, but you need to do a little modifying first.
you need to modify the combustion chamber a little other wise you'll get an 11:1 compression with the stock pistions, you'll also need to use center bolt valve covers
Don't for get about the Vortec heads they will out flow the l98 easily and they are cheap new compleat they go for $425 use on e bay about $250 you will need a different intake if you are staying with a carb you have a couple choices.

the 64cc edelbrock rpm head is my vote, under 1000 dollars and the compression will be alright without mods. they breath MUCH better than even the raised exhaust zz4 head and still have a 170cc runner. why spend 800 on nice L98 heads when the edelbrocks have the smaller runner but MUCH better flow, also the cc chamber you want to start with.
Air Flow Research heads are great. You can get them in almost any CR you want. CNC ported right out of the box with a FIVE angle valve job! D ports! 2.02 intake/ 1.60 exhast swirl polished valves ( I think they are stainless) and there's more...Go here: http://www.airflowresearch.com/
