Finally! I have tunes again. Thanks to the members who recommended Doctor Don's. Yanked the system plus tuner and shipped them out to Texas. They were returned within a week's time.
For flat rate of $250 he restored the system, replaced defective components, worn belts, illumination bulbs, lubricated all mechanical assemblies, and thru in an updated tuner/control module at no extra charge (usually costs $175). Sounds great again and he gave me a lifetime guarantee after I questioned replacing the system as compared to repair. Don has some impressive credentials, as well.
OK - so they forgot to send the mounting hardware for the tuner but did overnight it. A little inconvenient but overall very worthwhile.
All is well in tunesville - why, he even sent back the CD the player was holding hostage! Highly recommend and thanks again for the help. jj :flag
Good for you! I happen to like the Bose sound as well and didn't mind having my unit re-built. I had the system overhauled (similar work to what you had done) here in St. Louis by a local Delco repair rep. Hold on to your hat though, you're about to receive a ton of comments about how you could have bought a slick aftermarket system to replace the Bose. Personally, I happen to like keeping my Vette as stock as possible. I'll bet it's great having your tunes back - enjoy.

Shady - (wups; sorry 'bout that!)
Does the Bose have a separate tuner? I had my Bose checked by a Delco shop in Buffalo 4 years ago; I pulled it myself, and I don't recall a separate assembly...Do the later models have one?
I can only speak for the later model C4's. My '92 has a tuner (I call it a receiver) tucked under the dash on the passenger side. Other models have them located in the hidden compartment behind the passenger seat and some deep behind the dash. They say the tuner rarely goes bad but I didn't want to waste my time just sending the one piece and finding out it was OK. Turned out it was well worth it anyway. :yesnod:
Interesting thread you pulled up, Rich. I read it and the pricing and then had to re-evaluate my bill from Don's. It seems he charged me $90 for the tuner replacement. When we received the tuner with no hardware, we became aware it was not the one I had originally sent. I questioned Don regarding this and his explanation led me to believe there was no charge. I'm not annoyed or anything because if he had offered me a re-conditioned tuner at half price, I certainly would have taken it.
I thought this stint of repairs was finally over. And then I closed the hatch and about a foot of weatherstripping jumped out at me. So I kicked the tire and split my toenail. Only hurts when I engage the clutch. Which is frequently. :bb

Did Dr Bob tell you he would send a replacement and not necessarily your turn-in??? I imagine he keeps a couple all set to go, so you don't have to wait...Or him either, if it needs a flux capacitor he doesn't have in stock...
On taking your frustration out on your car...tsk, tsk... :nonod: :nono:
...After all, it's only doing what GM designed it to do...Break down over time... :yesnod:
I figure by the time I replace everything that breaks, I'll have a new car...And Jeff Kopp will be rich... :D

No, Rich - he didn't tell me about replacing the tuner but I know that is the standard way of doing stereo business (and as you described, as well). But, if the tuner wasn't defective, the question would be then why "fix" it by replacement. As I said, I am happy to have the new, improved model but a little communication goes a long way.
Frustration? I jumped in the Vette and drove north along the coast. Dined on some filet mignon, a pretty good Cabernet and suddenly the world was right, again. Damn the torpedoes! :smash:
