Default 1-2 Shift in '92 700R4

Lately I have noticed that in full-throttle acceleration, I get into the rev limiter before the transmission will shift from first to second. It seems like it will take a couple of seconds to make the shift. The shift is firm and will break the tires loose, but this doesn't seem right. 2-3 shift is OK - the shift will take place before the rev limiter cuts in. I have 30K on the car and the fluid looks clear and no smell to it.

Ideas??

Sounds like your govenor is out of adjustment. I had the same problem after having my tanny rebuilt. The custom chip I have raised the rev lim to 6100rpm and my wot 1-2 shifts are just before 6000rpm. Stock valve trains are not good above 6200. :smash:

I don't like to make scarry statements but that is just how mine started to act before it I had to have it redone.

Mine got so bad that 1-2 and 3-4 were on the limiter, and I had to back off the gas to get a shift.

Of course mine had 128000 on it and looked like it had never ever had a thing done to it when I got it!!!!

I hope you dont have to go down the same road, but on the bright side, man what a difference it shifts firm and quick now, and 2400 stall converter is great!

Good Luck with it

The governor was my first thought as all of the shifts are firm and quick especially at part throttle.

Now the biiig question: how will transmission shops handle a fix like this? Should I expect something like "You need a complete rebuild" or will a reputable shop do a diagnosis based on my explanation of the problem and then fix it?

I suppose this might be a good time to consider a shift kit and a complete flush. Any recommendations on a kit? I've heard good things about TransGo and B&M both. This is basically a street car with some autocross use. As for fluid, should I look at synthetic ATF like Mobil-1 or just stick with the Dexron IIe fluid?

My 86 is doing the exact SAME thing. Here is what I have had done so far.

Replaced governor with GM reman governor. (no change) However, the trans guy did notice that there was already a shift kit in the tranny. We are suspecting that the heavier 1-2 shift spring from the shift kit was used and pushed the 1-2 shift too far out. We tested this by using a heavier truck governor and the 1-2 shift dropped to 5500 rpm, but 2-3 also dropped to 4000 rpm. Plus, with the heavier governor, I dont have a kickdown to 2nd at at WOT going 60mph. We are going to replace/modify the 1-2 shift spring to lower the 1-2 WOT shift to 4500-5000 and put the Vette governor back in to raise the 2-3 WOT shift back to normal. Hope fully this will fix the problem I have.
