ok, over the last couple days I have noticed that my center console gets hot to the touch. It gets hot enough that the change I keep in the cup holder is sometimes to hot to hold on to. What would be the cause for this? Bad cats???
I would say yes. I have an 84 383 SR and a Random Tech cat, I didn't replace the stock sheild over the cat and my console gets warm, but thats all, just warm. If you're getting that hot I would get concerned about the area just above the cat getting damaged from heat. Have you noticed any performance changes? A plugged cat would definately affect performance. Do a backpressure check with a vacuum gage.
Have you done any work to the trans lately? Its easy to not notice that the boot for the shifter that covers the hole in the floor gets knocked out of place(not the cosmetic boot on the top of the console). If this is the case, you'd likely have noticed a little louder sound inside the car from the transmission. Just something to check.
As has already been suggested above, your lower shifter boot is torn or not properly installed. It is very common on 6 speed Vettes, most mechanics can not properly install the boot after a trans/clutch job - it really ends up being a time consuming job to do correctly. I ended up modifying my console are to make the lower boot more accessible during service.
When your catalytic converters go over temperature they will first heat up the transmission tunnel area closest to your feet - you will definately notice your feet getting warm. When coins get too hot to handle, that means your coin holder is getting a direct blast of heated air, which only happens when there is trouble with your lower boot.
I always have my top down in the summer :) But this is not b/c of the sun, on a rainy day last week (obviously top is up) it was still pretty warm over there.
Just check on my way home. I have heat coming from the wheel wells and from the center console.
