Changing timing gear with distributor out question?
I took the intake out of my 84 crossfire....that included removing the distributor.
I am getting ready to change the timing chain and gears. Do I need to reinstall the distributor before I do it? I'm worried that things will move while its out and then everything will be out of whack.

You should have the number one cylinder at the TDC firing postion. The timing mark on the balancer should be on the 0 mark on the timing tab. The cam gear dot will then be at the 12 o clock position as will the crank gear dot. You can replace the cam and crank gears in this position or rotate the crank one revolution to put the the cam gear at the six o clock postion and the crank at 12 o clock position which will be easier to get the new gears lined up . The number one cylinder is now at TDC on the overlap position so you will have to rotate the crank one revolution clockwise to bring it back to the number one TDC firing position. Then you can install the intake and distributor. I do not think you needed to remove the intake and distributor just to replace the crank and cam gears but you may be doing something else to the engine. You do need to drop the oil pan to do the job right with no leaks at the timing cover and you should use a one piece felpro oil pan gasket.
Once you get the timing cover off, rotate the engine so the marks are dot to dot, replace the timing set, turn the engine over til both marks are at 12o'clock postion. Drop the dist in with the rotor pointing at the dist cap #1 spark plug tower.
