I have been looking at threads doing some research, but none of them seem to fit my problems directly. I have an 85 with the 4+3 and it appears to be stuck in second. I have had the car since September and have been trying to figure it out since. I have been gone and am just now getting back into the car...I have checked the linkage for proper adjustment, which it appears to be right, pulled the sidecover on the 4 speed and checked the shifter forks, don't appear to be bent or anything...took a look inside and didn't find any pieces...so at least that still appears to be "bulletproof".
I can start the car and let it idle, but it seems that the clutch is still rubbing and smells like burnt clutch. I have checked the master cylinder and slave, they don't appear to be leaking, and the fluid is cleanish.
Just for good measure, I ordered a new master cylinder, slave, overdrive filter, and since I only received one ignition key from the previous owner...ignition switch and door locks.
I also have a question regarding trans fluids...what are you guys using? The book calls for straight 80w for the manual portion and Dex II ATF for the overdrive...
Planning on getting all of this in tomorrow if the weather is cooperative since the car is outside and it started slushing [too warm for snow and too cold for rain] tonight.
The shaft that goes through the side cover to the shifter linkage is only pressed on to the cam that moves the forks;
when it comes loose it is possible to move the shifter without any movement taking place inside the trans
I'll check it out today and see if the shafts are loose...they may be. I can move the shifter with the car off, push clutch in and hear movement. I know that it's going into reverse too since the lights go on, but it appears to be in 2 gears at the same time.
Highly likely if it has the problem I describe above.
Reverse has a separate lever so reverse would be engaged correctly but the 1-2 fork would not be moved to the neutral position
It is also possible for the pitman arm to come loose from the end of the shaft outside the cover...which is exactly what happened to my 73 some years ago. Two gears at once sounds so familiar! That was a really easy flaw to find and fix.
Good Luck.
thanks for the reply...I haven't been able to look at the car today, parts didn't arrive and I wasn't anxious to lay in the cold without feeling productive... parts will be in tomorrow and I'll take a look. I have had the side cover off and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary, but then again I was hoping that the shift forks weren't bent or pieces falling out of the trans so I wasn't too particular on the spindle portion.
Again, thanks for the input and I'll keep everyone updated on the progress.

The fault may not be visible straight up.
You may have to lock the selector comb on the inside of the cover and work the shaft with a wrench on the flats
to see if the shaft is slipping at the joint
Mine broke on a hard 1-2 shift but luckily the selector went to the neutral position so I was able to drive home using 3rd and 4th
well, now I'm screwed...it's snowing outside...so I'll have to let her sit until it gets nice out...one of the downsides to having too many projects and no garage. I was able to get the side cover back off, but have not checked the spindles for movement...this all happened after the PO was doing some "aggressive" driving in a dead end turnaround. I have the side cover inside and, yes, I have covered the hole in the side of the case to make sure that nothing gets in there. When I took the side cover off, it appeared that both shift forks were in the neutral position though... I'll check the spindles for movement.
Thanks for the help.
Merry Christmas, or happy holidays, whichever you prefer.
