89 C4, left headlight will open using the headlight switch but will not close when turning lights off. Any suggested ideas?
Unplug the working headlight motor and verify that the malfunctioning motor is operating (attempting to close) when you shut the headlights off. If you hear the motor running, read up on replacing the gearbox bushings.
If the motor is not running, you'll need to familiarize yourself with a multimeter and find out where the the "open" is.
there is also bushing syou can get at home depot for pennies, i used them and they have been working fine for quite awhile, i was going to order from vette shop, but they wanted like $8 to ship, why they couldn't put them in an envelope is ridiculous.

I also have the same exact problem as you and if we are in the same boat the bushings and gears are not bad at all. Someone told me they think it is the brushes up inside the motor itself not inside the gear and I have not gotten around to replace them to confirm it yet.
Start off replacing your bushings and gear if needed and tell us how it works though. Just use the video earlier posted, I used it also to do my bushings.

I had one motor bad and one good so I decided to replace the bushings on both of them. I went to home depot and replaced them with the metal nuts that go on the end of a bolt and made sure they stacked up the same height and size around, never have to worry about them going bad again now

Rebuilt my (1989) gears about 3 years ago. Recently, left headlight doesn't flip closed again. Pull headlight ****, push in again...and it closes.
Kind of took the gear/bushing repair to be a permanent fix over factory quality plastic parts. Doesn't seem old enough (or used enough) to be bad again. (Plus, they're not creeping closed or jumpy. Smooth closing on 2nd tries.)
It's only messed up a couple of times in the past month.
I assume it's more likely to be a relay thing this time. Do relays control both open/close events? 1/side, 4 total?
