I'm curious if anyone has installed an Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap intake on an '84. I like the specs, but want to be able to close the hood. The plan would be the Air-Gap, topped with a Holley 600 Vac Sec, and a drop base air cleaner. I know an RPM Performer will fit, I'm just not keen about the power range.
Id bet they run just about the same.
I cant tell the difference from a gap/non air gap manifold if it helps.
There was a member in AZ who had one on his cant remember if his hood was stock or not. He pops in from time to time.
the L83 heads and cam are all better suited to a performer so is the 600 Holley. I doubt that you will have room under the hood. you should have about 9.5 inches above the front and rear manifold seals. in that you need to fit the manifold, carb and air cleaner.
I cannot speak about the RPM Air Gap but I have a GM ZZ4 lowrise intake and a 600 edelbrock on my 84 and with a 2" high by 7" diameter air cleaner there is just not that much room. The wing nut actually rubs on the hood slightly on mine as well as part of the outside rim. I agree with Crepitus that an RPM Air Gap and stock 624 heads and oem cam will not give you any better performance than a Performer, ZZ4 or even an aluminum Q-jet intake.
Vetteoz: The Air-Gap is about 3/4" taller than the Performer RPM according to Edelbrock. I currently still have the CrossFire, so don't know how much space is left above a Performer RPM. Which is why I asking if anyone has attempted to use an Air-Gap on an '84.
Crepitus: Stock heads and cam are going in the trash; thanks for the enlightening me about the 9.5 inches between the seal deck and hood - very helpful.
Wilcar: Are you using a drop base air cleaner? How much drop?
If you dont need a choke a Holley with short bowl vents and no choke housing will help bring the necessary height under the air cleaner lid down. on a engine with the stock bottom end 6000rpm limit something like the 650 street HP should work well.

Good idea, I'll convince my son that he needs to swap carbs with me as his is exactly like that. He's struggling with hood clearance too - 91 Camaro. I'll just buy him a drop base and he'll be happy.
