Default The good and the bad

Just finished alot of work on my 93. New power steering pump, all new pullys, serpentine belt, plugs and wires and pulled radiator to clean. The good i had no parts left over! It started right up and this is after sitting for over a month. The bad,i think i still have air in the system only ran it 1 minute if that and i got a whine out of pump. I put some fluid in new pump when i installed it but by the time i got it attached im sure i spilled some of it.I tried to turn wheel and i could tell i had no assist from pump.On other old cars that ive changed out pump i didnt have this problem.I guess it depends how long the return hose/line is.I have a friend that has a Mityvac says i can borrow it. I haven used one before and is it needed? Im working with all new fluid i flushed most of the old fluid. Thanks Dave

Are you sure the problem was the pump. The steering racks, at least on the early c4s, had problems binding and often needed rebuilding. When you turned the wheel it feels like there is no power assist, but the problem is in the rack not the PS unit.

You need to bleed the air out of the system. With the motor on, turn the steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times. Better to do this on jackstands. This should get the air out.

I hope your wrong. The original problem started the first very cold day and went away after she ran at idle for a 2 or 3 minutes. The old pump was shot when i got it out there was alot of back and forth play in the shaft.Dave
