I have a '93 convertible. It was originally supplied to Japan, and was imported to UK in 2006. I've had it a few months and have just realised that there is no way to flash the headlights (that I can find). I can find no mention of it in the handbook (downloaded). Do US spec cars have this facility, and cars for the Japanese market not? If so could it be that I can just plug in a relay or fuse to activate it?
I live in Devon (UK) where we have miles of single track roads where we give way or reverse to pass (not easy with LHD!), so headlamp flashers are real useful!!
You just do it with the turn signal lever...clicking that back/forth between hi & low. There is not an off/on clicker that does not actuate the headlight doors...that I am aware of.
I suppose that if absolutely necessary to have an on/off clicker...for a passing signal, you could wire in a foot button in the floor pan up high or far left so it was out of the way. Even a trigger type switch on the shifter..?
Being a Brit myself I see what you are asking....no there is no way to flash the headlights if they are not already in the extended position. You could flash the fog lights though by turning them on then off, otherwise you have to switch the headlights on, let them cycle up and then turn them off.
Thanks guys. I'm thinking I may wire a non-locking switch across the foglights, but taking the feed from before the sidelight switch so that I don't need the sidelights on for it to work. Then of course, to be legal here I need the sidelights to be white not yellow, and I need a rear foglight. The rear indicators are already sorted, but that's the only one the previous UK owner did! He must have a friendly MOT tester!

mine has one of those crappy little "universal" aftermarket fog lights, whoever had the car before me fitted it purely for the MOT I reckon, as it spends its life tucked up out of sight behind the rear bumper and can be swung down for testing time, didnt even know it was there until I saw a red glow under the car one day when fiddling with switches!

Do you have white sidelights? If so, how? I'd like to convert the front fogs to dual filament to achieve this, but won't know if it's possible till I remove them from the bumper
Do you mean the front sidelights? then yes, their white, like that when I got it..( thought they all were)
I thought mine were white until I turned off the front fogs and was left with dim yellow lights (dual filiment bulbs in the indicators). I'd like to add dual filament holders and bulbs to the fogs, and remove the sidelight feeds from the yellow lamps, and wire them into the fogs - simples, providing I can change the bulb holders....
You have parking lights the dimmer type lights in the bumper they are turned on when the parking or headlights are turned on.
Then you have the fog lights in the bumper closer to the middle of the car they can be switched on and off via the fog light switch with or without the headlights on but at least park lights on.
The headlights can be set to low beam or high beam via the stalk switch on the steering column, when the light switch is turned on.
The lens on the side of the bumpers have a cornering light that is activated by the indicator, some use the amber light as an indicator only. In US they have them on with the lights.
Europe England and Australia require the amber lights only be used as indicators as far as i know.
I knew the above, but wasn't sure if there was a facility for flashing lights (either head or fog lights) at other drivers. Where we live in Devon, a large proportion of roads are single track, with hedges either side, and occasional passing spaces. So it would be handy to stop and flash the other guy to come on through a wide spot etc. Apparently this is not possible even on US spec cars. I'll have to get my soldering iron out!!
Thanks for you thoughts.
You can only flash your headlights if you have them flipped open... Ie turn lights on and press **** in but not all the way just to turn the light off then pul on or if your lights are already on then you can flash high beam. Otherwise you can have the fog light switch on and pull the park light switch off and in to flash others.
Not sure on later years with stalk light switches .
Or just put the lights on and off (that will flip your lights up with lights on) am sure others will get the idea that you are trying to warn them)
