I thought when I showed up today they would have had a bunch of D44 laying around with batwings, C-beam and driveshafts.
I was hoping to check each of them out and pick the "best looking" D44.
However, I was told they have to pull one out of a C4 in the yard.
I asked if I could look in the yard and find a "decent" wrecked C4 and at least pick the car it came out of, but NO.
I really hope they dont find the biggest piece of crap in the yard with 200k miles and pull the D44 from it!!
I will just wait and see when they call me in a few days. I will go in and take a look at the D44 they pulled for me. It will be drained and pulled apart so I can inspect the gears and guts.
The "ask" and the "sale" in salvage are usually very negotiable! You need to use the leverage of being the "buyer" to your advantage. They're accustomed to deductions for everything and your approach needs to just that. Check everything, end-play of the short axles, excessive backlash ring gear/pinion, and the information from the differential. The ring gear should have information on it that matches the information etched in the housing. Check! The through bolt holes on the beam and the differential need to be "round". The drive-shaft needs to have a slip-yoke, it doesn't matter that you don't need it but it needs to have one in good condition. Deduct for everything!
Picked up the D44 from Contemporary Corvette tonight. Looks to be in great condition.
Out of 91 with 70k miles on it. Looks cleaner than my 93 with 82k on it!!
I have some more questions for everyone.
The only other part I need is the 15 tooth gear?? Part Number 8642620
I can swap over my auto D36 vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
Also, I have a PCM4LESS chip. Do I need to send it back to Alvin for a flash due to the D44 gear swap??
The part number listed is correct for the "drive" but you need a "driven" and also a "VSS" for the required driven.
The driven you should need is 25513049 (42 tooth) and the most difficult to acquire VSS 10456092 (for 40 -45 tooth driven).
You've just spent $1200 at CC so maybe they would be inclined to help you. The VSS you need is only found in a '91 - '93 with a factory 3.07 ratio. I would think they have transmissions removed and on the shelf. The VSS you need I'm quite sure would be "black" and you can check on the plastic portion of the VSS it should be cast 40 - 45. The driven gear will likely be correct but if not don't toss it. Someone will need it!
The transmission codes on the tags that you're looking for are:
1YDM, 2YDM & 3YDM Now that same code is used with a 2.73 build so you need to make sure the VSS is black (I'm quite sure) and the driven gear on it should be likely what you need also. The 3.07 used 18/42. If you found the correct coded transmission and it had a 38 tooth gear that's incorrect.
has them for $11 ea , unfortunately they don't have the driven gear in stock
Edit
Corvette Central has the #25513050 listed as their # 534106 for $9.00
Ok guys I spent the last 3 hours searching the web for the drive, driven gears and VSS.
Per EBAY:
8642620 15 Tooth Grey Drive Gear $23.00
10456089 White VSS $68.00
25513050 42 Tooth Green Driven Gear $25.00
Found these part numbers on several old threads for the D36 to D44 swap
I also found the tail shaft O-ring seal and the drive gear retainer clip. Are these needed?
The 10456089 is NOT correct that's for I'm sure a ZF. The 25513050 is a 43 tooth driven. I posted correct part numbers for you earlier and explained a conversation with CC that could solve your issues. The only correct part number in your effort is the 8642620.
Yes you need the square-cut seal for the housing and also the clip (5/16" there are two different widths).
