Default Antenna (motor) not working

The original Bose stereo in my 85 c4 was working fine. It stopped working about 3 days ago. The antenna does not go up when I turn the radio on. I am getting no sound from the speakers. I am wondering if the antenna has to be up to get the radio to even make sound. I do hear the motor on the antenna click...but no movement of the antenna. Has anyone had this problem? I do not want to go into the dash if possible. Hoping that it is just a loose wire or bad motor instead of tearing into the radio. The digital readout of the radio works fine.

You should get some reception with the antena down. I got lucky and mine is stuck up! They make an aftermarket antena repair kit and motor(if needed) for your 85.

Nows the time to upgrade that 28 year old stereo and speakers into the 21st Century!

I thank you for your reply. The bose is putting no noise out although gauges say otherwise. I here a clicking noise at the motor for the antenna. Does the on switch for the bose an
d the antenna have to be raised to just get static? I would possibly upgrade to a good stereo with a subwoofer. Any suggestions? Such as mounting tips for the sub and "clean wiring".

Test your Radio fuse and CLK/CTSY fuse. One of them is likely blown.

Both are in main fuse panel on passenger side of dash.

I went with Alpine Doubble DIN and speakers and no subwoofer. Not sure about how much room you have in your pre-90?

Check the relay by the hatch latch under the bezel

From your description, it sounds like the antenna mast ribbon is broken.

There are replacements that are fairly inexpensive and not too hard to replace.

In a word, Yes.

Although some radios sensitivity is higher than others and will pickup some stations without one, most radios need the antenna in order to receive any radio stations. Especially FM.

Turn the radio on and go to the back of the car and see if you can pull the antenna up by hand.

Unplug the antenna relay temporarily until you replace the mast.

You'll have to remove the rear hatch panel. The relay is on the drivers side.

I do recall there is a relay under the dash, it powers the bose amps i think. I did replace the radio and found the new one was not putting sound out, turned out to be that relay well that was years ago and have since removed my std radio and put a kenwood one with 10 stacker cd. Also removed the bose speakers/amps and put 6x9 in the hatch area and bypassed the front door amps and wired the speakers direct.

The antenna is a simple thing maybe the large gear just needs to be greased and a new mast fitted which are still available from corvettecentral and still quite cheap.
