I hear a pulsating noise that seems to come from the back of my 1986. I beleive that it is the fuel pump. Should I replace the fuel pump. The car seems to run fine, I am concerned that the pump may suddenly die, the noise jist starte to be noticible.
To be honest, if it's the original pump, I would swap it out for a new one .. They're really pretty cheap to buy and easy to put in.. I like the security of having new parts on my old car, especially something as important as a fuel pump.... ....WW
Here's a good pump with the entire kit to install it...This is the brand I put in my 89 but with a higher output for my bigger motor...Plus it's on sale..
I noticed the pulsation sound a couple of days before I put the car into winter storage. The car performed as normal. I run the car all summer with the top down, I noticed the pulsation sound after I put the top up, it could have been there all summer un noticed because all I hear are exhast notes with the top down.
I followed the pulsation sound around the right side of the car and ended up at the rear, I did not think to open the gas cap and listen.
It sounded similar to a relay chattering, but as far as I can determine there are no relays on a 86 that far back on the right side. The sound does not appear to come from the door or the convirtible hatch release. I only noticed the sound with the car runnung, never thought to listen with the ignition on but not started.
I am looking at my to do list and figured that this might take priority when I take the car out of storage next month. I am ready to order a fuel pump and thought someone in tech/performance might give me some guidence in confirming the issue.
The antenna is on the left side of the car, I do not think that is the source of the pulsating noise. The fuel lines and filter ore on the right side and the sound seems to travel allong that side and is loudest toward the rear of the car.
I appreciate your suggestion and will check the antenna relay to make certain.
The fuel pump should only be noticeable (a slight brrrrr sound) with ignition on and engine of, or when starting car once the engine is running you should not be able to hear it. That is with standard quiet mufflers even.
Good idea to replace the fuel pump they like any mechanical part have a limited lifespan, especially if you run the tank low as they rely on the fuel to keep em cool. I remember many years ago before my fuel pump died ... wow must be around 10 years ago .... it did become more noticeable (noisy) when turning ignition on during start.
(think i need to order a new fuel pump to have as a spare) however i also have an inline fuel pump to ensure adequate supply to my supercharged 383, hopefully that would be enough to get me home but best not wait for that as the fuel pumps know when it is the worst possible weather and late at night to fail.
You can run the fuel pump via putting battery 12 volts to the under dash alcl terminal G the bottom left connector, to eliminate any other electrical items such as the antenna motor or relay when the ignition is switched on.
