I've been doing some searches for a good system. I'm not looking for a passive system like PKE or even an alarm. Just a simple keyless remote fob for the doors.
Huh? Unlocked is detected no matter if done with the key or the electric actuator. There are no electronics involved with the door key like there is with the ignition key.

I'm sure you know more about it than I do, but just out of curiosity, how does it know the difference between a key unlock and a manual switch unlock?

I'm not sure it can. The ignition and computer know the presence of the ignition key because it has a chip in it. I assume since no such chip exists on the door key the factory alarm only knows the door mechanism has been opened via a detection switch of some sort. I'll know more when my shop manuals come in from Ebay.
From the owners manual: The door locks also activate the theft deterrent system. locking the doors from the outside with the oval key will not arm the system. The doors must be locked with the optional power lock switch. Unlocking the door with the oval head key disarms the system.
Interesting as it goes on to explain how to test the alarm. Arm it. Wait 15 seconds. Unlock the door from the inside and then open the door ....alarm should sound.
I'm going to test this 2 ways.
1. Set the alarm. Unlock the door using the mechanical slide lever, open the door and see if it alarms.
2. Set the alarm. Unlock the door using the electric door unlock button, open the door and see if it alarms.
Unlock door and from the inside or outside and the alarm blows your ears out in a closed garage.
Same procedure but unlock the door using the key and alarm is deactivated.
So there must be a switch on the key mechanism that checks to see if you turn a key in the lock to disable the alarm.
That being the case it will have to be addressed with any system that is going to use a key fob to open the doors electronically by activating the door unlock solenoid.

Yes, I don't have an FM, but unlocking with the key is different than via manual switch or even electric switch. You might want to try one more test; I used to have an 85 and if I remember right, unlocking the pass. door with the key would also set off the alarm.
