Well, Jenn was right. I'm still running warm now that it's 3pm in the afternoon on a 90 degree sunny day. Hit 222*F digital coolant in stop and go traffic on Central Expressway. Analog was at the second to last mark (whatever temp that is).
I've got to figure out how to get this thing to run cooler. The 383 is causing all kinds of extra heat, and it's going to self destruct itself if I can't figure out how to keep the temps down lower.
Should I try richening it up a bit??
Would putting cats on help?
What about another in-line radiator of some kind?
222 in stop and go traffic doesnt sound all that hot to me.. I get up at around 215 some times when it is stop and go.. What are your freeway temps???
-Mark
Once I got moving, the temp dropped to 200. That's with A/C on full blast. It was more like stop traffic though. There was a wreck. Lastnight I was driving around with the A/C on full blast on the highway and it stayed at 190 or so.
I know it's not that bad, but I don't want to blow a head gasket here. The motor was just done a few months ago.
I know for sure if i hadn't cleaned my radiator out that I would have overheated today in that traffic.
220ish is absolutly not "hot" its avg for stop and go in 90 degree weather.
i know i know.. but i don't like it :). The digital is the temperature of the water at the waterpump though. The analog is the temperature of the head.. which was at the line before it gets to the solid area. That's the one i'm more concerned about.
Sorry I was right :( I drive the 85 up to about 230 (only gets that high in stop and go too) above that I get too nervous too. These mods definatly make it a little harder to keep em cool. Let me know what else you come up with.
We have had the fans programmed with 160 degree thermo (obviously), secondary fan (early Z51 feature) hardwired bypass switch and heat wrapped headers. None of this helps much so I just don't drive it on 95+ degree days. I'm lucky we have 4 cars, I just drive the Ruby or the Bronco.

Yeah, this is my daily driver though. We do have an extra car at the house here luckily, but when i go back to college I won't have it available.
My fans come on really early too, and i have a 160* T-stat.. I'm running out of things to do to keep it cool.
You have all the proper cooling mods Curtis? (I assume you do) Try putting an EXTRA fan on your car. In FRONT of the radiator (never know...may help) Also, what sort of water pump are you running? That's CRAZY insane temps! My buddy has a 383 SuperRammed 87 Vette with the B4P Dual Fan option with similar cooling mods to yours and mine...and he's only reached 205º in stop and go traffic
They make a new radiator with dimpled tubes--somthing about it slows down the flow a bit and has more surface area. Dont know if its available for vettes --and dang if I can remember who makes it :(
Here is what I put in my 1992 LT-1 after going around and around with the "cooling problems".
yes it costs a few $$$, but how much did your 383 cost? Also how much to replace it if it over heats?
To me the Griffen was really good insurance against any heating problems. Vette now runs around 180-185 degrees in temps up to 104 degrees on the freeway. In traffic, it never goes over 193, Ed Wright chip, the second fan turns on then. Even with the A/C on, I put a ZR-1 condenser in along with the new radiator. (you have to bend the in/out tubes a bit to get it to fit. It also takes a bit of mod's on radiator cover to get the big Griffen in. I also have a A/T cooler in line with the Griffen on. Just my 2 cents. :flag

The waterpump was an O'Reilly's. It looked EXACTLY like the factory one and even had the same casting marks.

I really wish i had the money for a larger radiator, but I don't. Plus Denny McClain from our club (and the forum) bought a BeCool radiator for like $600 and his car ran hotter than with the stock radiator! So he put the stock one back in.
My 396 does run hotter than the 350. Stays at around 190 most of the time with the air on. In traffic when its real hot and the air on it gets up to about 208-210 most of the time. We have basically the same set up but I do have the high flow cats.
Glock, have you considered just replacing the radiator with a new one (stock)? I know cleaning it helps (it did for mine) but the new radiator and new water pump (and intake manifold gasket) REALLY did the trick for me. Give it a thought...
There could be a few things wrong: thermostat might not be opening up all the way; radiator could be clogged or real dirty; might not have the right water/coolant mixture; maybe the radiator cap is not holding enough pressure(even if it is new it could still be bad, take a pressure tester and check to see if it works properly).
Look at my $260 Northern Aluminum Radiator Post :D
I will be posting more photos when I get a chance, but at 90F I'm now running 175F Highway and 215F with air in stop and go crawl on FDR in Manhattan with 2,800 stall converter on automatic!!

yeah, we have similar setups. I really wonder if my REALLY free flowing exhaust is causing higher engine temps. One exhaust shop told me that cutting off my mufflers and having no cats would cause a rise in temp.

I really cleaned it well, I don't think a new one would help enough... but yes it might help a little.
