Diagnosis Needed--Howling Noise
My 89 coupe (with autotranny) is making a howling noise that sounds exactly like a power steering system low on fluid. However, I checked the fluid and it's fine.
This problem just started today. Here's what's going on:
Stopped at a light, foot on the brake--The howling noise. Happens in Drive and Neutral.
Going down the street--Howling noise goes away until I brake again, either for a stop or to slow down.
Whistling noise--Constant. At a light, it's a low pitch. When I pressed the accelerator (in Drive and Neutral), it gets higher in pitch.
My guess is some sort of vacuum line leak, but that's just a guess. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
WL

Re: Diagnosis Needed--Howling Noise (White Lightning)
I know the noise you speak of, but I have not isolated it yet. All I can say is that it is NOT the AIR pump.

Re: Diagnosis Needed--Howling Noise (Matt Black)
I think I've figured it out. After a little more testing, seems like the alternator bearings are going bad because the alternator is definitely having some problems. I'm going to change it this weekend and see it that helps.
