I'm going to suggest flushing all your hoses and radiator, check if it is collapsed and replace the pump. Get a new pump from aftermarket. It is too cheap to fix when you consider that it can break down and cost you a good engine in the middle of BFE. BTDT.
thats the plan. Its warranty so I have to order the replacement, probably going to upgrade with a cash suppliment along with the core, and just swap it out. I've gone thru EVERYTHING and tested it all...taken things apart and looked. The pump impeller is all thats left. Just baffling cause its one of those "never seen that before" deals...
but that don;t mean it can't happen.
Speaking of BFE....
My BFE story involves a severe hangover, a drive home from Phx to L.A. at 2 pm Sunday in the summer (115 by then)...and a blow-out (shredded) about 50 miles west of Goodyear. Kinda right between west Phx and the Ca border. BFE if there ever was...

yeah....NOW we're havin fun !
I'd get an Edelbrock unit that is made for our cars.
ya ya, I know this is a 4 year old post, but was there ever a solution? I seem to be having a similar problem on my 88. I'm thinking the water pump belt is slipping, though. Is that common?
Thanks

Read my post, easiest thing to do. It should come out like a garden hose.
has anyone ever had this happen?
a water pump seemingly unable to move ANY water?
L-98 new pump.
Sometimes I can start up, look in the rad filler hole and the water is not moving any..nada, nothing. Zero motion of any kind. Rev the engine..nothing. as if the pump were not turning. Not sucking down, nothing.
After a few minutes it will suddenly start flowing water thru the core as it should. lots of water.
This is NOT a thermostat issue. I have observed this with and without a stat installed.
Its like the impeller is not turning but the pulley IS.
Can the impeller spin on the shaft?
I do not know how they are attached, so I am not sure. This is strange...it did this again yesterday. Temps shot up to 240 in minutes. Hardly any pressure in the system and took cap off to see the water sitting still. Placed cap on and attempted to drive home. After a few minutes the temp started to fall rapidly to normal...190ish where the 180 stat would keep it normally.
I've never seen a pump start/stop before...is this even possible?
Regardless, I think I';m replacing this pump. Its lifetime warranty.
I just want to be sure there is nothing else going on.
these pumps can be one rotation for a conventional fan belt drive and the opposite rotation for a serpentine belt drive and look identical from the outside; did you get the right pump? since even a wrong rotating pump will move some water, it might explain, now it does, now it doesn't situation you're experiencing.
and yes, impellers can separate from the shaft.
out of pure curiosity, once the present pump is off the engine, pull the stamped metal backing plate and take a look see.
With replacement parts anything is possible. Incorrect impeller would not be intermittent condition. The water pump cover does come off, to take a look. The gasket is the large round mystery gasket that comes in sets, and is available by itself.
