I own an '86 vette. I purchased it with the odometer not working. The digital cluster works fine (all readouts). I would like to replace the odometer before I start putting more miles on the car. Carfax last shows 95k and it's now stuck at 99k. I would like to set it to at least 99k. Can I replace the odometer ONLY and how/where can I get an odometer minus the cluster. One more question, If I get one new or used, can I roll the miles forward to 99k? Thanks in advance.
if it is anything like the 84 dash. the odometer is hooked to the cluster by two wiires that run a little electro-gear driven odo set. i replaced the one in my 84 with one from a repair shop in florida. Ice Cold Air (in orlando?) was the name of the shop. i dont have the number handy, but you shoud be able to track it down. If you open the cluster up. make sure someone has not unplugged or knocked it loose by accident. as for the mileage once you have it apart you will see how you can set the milage(i think there is a law somewhere about that, but you are not supposed to speed either) , best of luck , keep small screwdirvers handy....
Im pretty sure with the age of the car, your odo on the title should read TMU (True Miles Unknown) or Exempt. My odo does something funky too. The thousand mile change occurs at 400 and not at the turn of the hundred mile. Ive tried to fix it, while keeping milage where it was at, but it still wants to turn the thousand mile at the 400 mark. Oh well....
Speed-O-Tach (800) 442-4491 , Concord, CA. They'll repair it for you if it's broken.
It may have just popped out of the socket and the gears may not be rotating with each other. Both sides of the cylinder have a little plastic cap that is rivetted with little teeny rivets, these hold the cylinder in place. One of my caps was missing, so I cut a piece of plastic and super glued it back in place. If you do this, make sure you don't get glue on the cylinder or number columns.
There are laws in regards to odometer tampering (even if you're just trying to fix it, it's still considered tampering). Out here in CA you're not even supposed to touch it if you aren't an authorized service center. :boxing Oh well, I'm not the original owner... :D Good Luck.
