Default My door is AJAR

Ok I just bought a 1988 that is in beautiful shape inside and out ! Everything works fine except the door is ajar light, it never goes off! I haven't messed with a C4 in a long time where should I start to fix this minor problem?

Probably a good place to start would be the "door ajar" switch on each door.

Black electrical tape on the dash makes it go away quickly and quietly.

on my 87 there is a plastic nipple on the switch button. Pull it out (carefully) and then close the door. It will reset the button.

Mine goes on and off intermittedly. Regardless how well the door is closed
I should just replace the sensor.... but why. I know it's closed damn it.
Besides this car flexes so much it wouldn't surprise me if it was flexing just enough to trip up the sensor anyway.

After I reinstalled the door stops, and put in new weatherstripping on my 85, my DOOR AJAR will flash sometimes when I take a right turn, or just in general when driving. I know it's just a hair off because while driving I can pull the door inward and the light will go away.

Lowes sells small sticky back rubber bump pads. Place one on the door frame where the switch hits. This will take up the space and stop the intermittent door ajar signal. You may or may not have a small push plug right where the switch hits the frame. I had one and it made it easy to find where to put the pad. You can use lipstick on the end of the switch so it leaves a dot where it contacts the door frame to help find the "sweet spot".

Someday you can adjust the switch. Or you can do this mod and forget about it. So far I've forgot about it.

Tempting... I do have some of those soft pads laying around from home "improvement" projects.

Mine had several strips of electrical tape applied to the door jamb when I bought it. The tape is still there and I have never had the door be a jar.

I used the softer spongy ones so they can compress to fit. I see a small dimple on the pads when I open the doors so there may be some benefit. Also, I used 1" in diameter, and black. They actually look factory installed.

Hay, I should put this in the "cheep or no cost mods" over on the C5 forum.

Anyway....

'95trippleblack', this mod would clean up your door jamb area by replacing the tape. It looks more like a "factory" install.

Regards

By the way, Ziggy, That's exactly when mine started showing door ajar. I replaced all weather stripping this past fall.

Windows, door seals, roof seals and back deck. It made it "like new" again. I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

Did you find it beneficial to adjust your windows to the new seals? I did adjust them, and it eliminated all wind noise. It's very quiet for a "rag-top", now. I used the "dollar bill" method to adjust, and started using dielectric grease to keep them soft and sealing.

Maybe if you adjust your windows some, the doors will close tighter, too. I think it's a balancing act.

Ok my door ajar problem has nothing to do with the door ajar switches. It has to do with the circuit board in the dash which is also causing the dash to fluctuate the rims according to the tach but in reality it's not fluctuating at the motor. It is also causing the mph to fluctuate in park and neutral and if I try to use the cruise control. The question is does the cruise go through that same circuit board ? When I drive by throttle the car runs smooth when I use the cruise the actual speed will fluctuate with the speedometer. Any ideas?
