Default 90 lcd flickering and backlight issues

The lcd on my dash cluster is going crazy. It flickers and the back-light comes on and off. I used to notice that if I smack the left corner of the dash it may or may not come back.. back-light comes on and flickering stops. Now smacking the dash really does nothing. I have read a few threads on this matter and before I do ridiculous amounts of trial and error I was wondering what you guys thought. My service engine light is on for a knock sensor.. I was going to replace the sensor because it doesn't go into limp mode, then I found that if I push on certain parts of the dash the service engine light goes out and the lcd corrects itself(sometimes for the lcd). Tomorrow I will do the easy stuff, check battery/alt, check grounds, check fuses, check distributor/coil.. I don't have an FSM so I am not sure as to the location of all the grounds I should be checking.

well,
IF you didn't already do permanent damage to the LCD panels... ....by BEATING the thing like it was a red-headed step child, then you might have a chance to fix it instead of abuse it.

Whats it matter anyway ? A few (quite a few actually) hundred bucks (or thousand) and you can get yourself a used replacement w/exchange, IF your old cluster is rebuildable..(no permanent damage...they (re-builders) don;t want it either if you broke the LCDs)

If the SES lite is ON. . . . It IS in LHM. If it still runs like crap there is a mechanical problem of some sort. Bad plug, wire, damaged cap/rotor...junk injector.
You NEED the FSM to figure that out. Buy used FSM sets on FleaBay for approx $75 for the set. New are 100 to $125. There is a link here for new books but many guys like the older editions because the wire diagrams are color like the EXACT wire harness color thats in your car. New ones come in B/W with the color written in letters. Cheaper to produce the new books I guess.

If there is a tent revival in town,. you might want to get that cluster to the Faith Healer.
The LCDs when broken usually don;t "correct itself". Did you know how hard it is to find a discontinued LCD panel these days?
Gotta keep the faith...

www.batee.com

He discusses the consequences of abusing your expensive & delicate electrical hardware that has not been mfg'd for 20 yrs...

Before you do ANYTHING else, order your FSM set. Otherwise, you will need a tow-truck to follow you everywhere like an AMF Harley Davidson.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply, I don't "beat" on the thing. I have found that by pushing on the dash or a couple smacks would fix the issue.. my smacks are definitely softer than what the car experiences during daily driving.. gotta love the suspension.

For the SES light.. the car does not go into limp mode. When the light came on I noticed no difference in performance.. validated by my local 1/8th mile strip. It has a tuned chip for the modifications I have done, I wonder if the limp mode has been bypassed. Perhaps the two are connected.. could a bad ground/batter/alt create both of these issues?

I will definitely get myself a FSM.. with all the work that I have done and will continue I need one. Time to go do some checking.
