I got the intake manifold off cleaned new gaskets and bought new bolt set etc. put up my RTV dam and gaskets and torqued the thing down per alldata specs. and then low and behold I turn around and what do I see!!!!! I took off the little metal pan thing on the underside of the manifold to clean it and forgot to put it back sitting on my shelf in the garage OUCH!!! my head was somewhere else. My question is do I need to put this back on because I really do not want to disturb this again... Please tell me its ok without it. All comments are welcome
When I was abotu 20 I left my tools in the intake valley along with some shop rags. Having too many beers with the guys. Accused them of stealing my tools
Drove it like it was stolen for a few yrs when I pulled it again everythign was still there. . Oops.
usually , the pan beneath the intake manifold is simply to prevent hot oil from splashing onto the bottom of the intake, keeping the charge cooler. It has no other use. Do you need it? naaa. Does it help? you betcha. happy motoring.

No. The pan is to prevent relatively cool oil from contacting the very hot underside of the intake where the EGR passages run. The hot EGR passages CAN burn the oil and cause carbon build-up on the underside of the intake. I said "can". I agree with cuisinartvette; run it.
