Default 86 Automatic - Shifter Problem

I have been trying to find the scematics for the shifter to find what parts are disconnected. When I use the shifter the indicator does not move and my shifter comes back further than it should. Once I get it in gear then I can push the shifter back to the proper position. I have pulled the column panel off and can see that there is an arm that goes over a small rod for the indicater however I can't tell how the arm stays on. I also feel there is something else going on as the shifter should not come back as far as it does.

Can anyone help me figure out what is going on. Thanks

The indicator fits over a pin on the side of the shifter.

I don't understand the "comes back too far" part. It should go all the way back into 1st gear. Mine is basically up against the back of the hole in the console. I don't think it would go back any farther because the shift boot is stretched pretty tight in 1st gear. The pin on the side of the shifter:

The shift cable is adjusted at the shift lever on the trans. There is a 15mm nut on the back side that allows the pin to adjust in the slot. Remove the shift cable, put the shifter in Park and move the pin until the shift cable slides onto the pin. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT WITH THE SHIFTER IN PARK. You can break your shift cable (don't ask how I know this). Get the nut reasonably tight so it won't slip and shift into 1st. Then tighten it down.

My console is apart right now so I can supply more pics if you need them.
