I finally found a little time to continue the Hotcam project tonight.
I installed the 1.6 roller rockers, but I left the original push rod guides in as I didn't have a deep dish socket the right size to remove them. Do I really need to remove them?
I heard here on the forum that they are pretty wide and really just hold the push rod in place during the install and really do not allign. But a couple seem awful close to the push rod after getting the rocker on.
Maybe. Were those self-aligning rockers you put on? You should never combine two or more of the rocker aligning methods on one engine. See my response to a similar question in the "Engine Mods" section. Good luck.
Your original rockers are self aligning (and the new ones should be too) so the guide plates you have do not actually guide. I don't know the real purpose of them but don't worry about them, just leave them there like factory did.
I know you are joking but before somebody does it I would like ask what happens if you remove them? I mean the rocker studs are standing on top of the guides and the guides are acting as shims (they are quite thick, maybe 2mm/0.05"). Do the guides sink too deep into heads messing up rocker geometry or what? Or do they seat to the same height but lose the support of the guides making them weaker?

I was wondering the same thing. Would the old studs seat OK without them in there. You might have to get new studs. One of the reasons I really didn't want to take them off.
Yes you will have to compensate for their height if you take them out. From all that I've been able to determine, they are there to align the pushrods during engine assembly only. Interestingly enough though, GM went to a higher spring rate on the roller lifter when they removed the plates. Scoggins Dickey has all the parts and part #'s http://www.sdpc2000.com
