Default Smoking

My 1985 is smoking on start up pretty good. and if i sit and let it idle for about 5-10 mins then give it gas it will smoke still.. i believe it is valve seals. the oil was low about a week or so ago. I check it again today and its right where its suppose to be. It smokes everytime i start it pretty good too. If the Valve seals were leaking wouldnt the oil be low after about a week? Coolant level is good so it isnt burning coolant. Im stuck and dont know what it is. Please help!!

Valve stem seals. It doesn't take a whole lot of burning oil to make smoke. I'll bet you use a quart about ever 1,000 miles or so.

How many miles are on your car? You would have to put 500 or more miles on it to detect oil being burned unless it was really over the top.

Most likely valve stem seals then. Some leak sooner than others.

I agree. Over time they get brittle and allow oil to flow past them to be burnt in the combustion chamber.

Yeah Lee maybe rings as well. I get the feeling a PO wasn't diligent about changing oil. The milage isn't that high on it.

I noticed that....

I've got an engine now thats got approx (odo was not working for months) 200K and IF it uses ANY oil its from a leak at the drain plug...
BUT,
I also change it with every full moon or 2000 miles.
