Default Do i need a speed sensor?

Havent had much luck with the search function so ill just ask,

Im swapping my 86 vert auto rear end with a Dana 44 from the same year standard. I rotated the wheel and counted right at 3 turns of the drive shaft (3.07 gears).

Do i need a speedo gear? can i rotate the existing 180 degrees as ive read on here and get an accurate reading? Where can i buy one if i do need it and to be honest i dont know where it is located.

What ratio are you doing with the D44?

Is the RPO label still in your car? GU2 or G44

Depending on the D44 ratio there are different choices. You WILL most likely need to change both the drive and driven gears. I might be able to help you. I've always been a "naysayer" for the rotation because of the seemingly "quality" reports that said it was a "no go". A couple recent installs seem to indicate it may be a good go but it's certainly NOT documented other than it seems to work but who knows how long until the gears fail because of a poor mesh or if it's a good mesh then it's likely OK.

I should have gears - I do have an NOS VSS but it's NOT inexpensive. I've got a snapshot that reflects how I mentioned I thought the retainer needs to be modified for a "rotation attempt"

The VSS is different. What tire size are you doing presently? You might as well correct the complete thing once and for all! When you mentioned the 3 turn I thought you were referring to your D36.

Who will be doing your install of the D44? What service are you planning on doing before installing the D44?

The change required for you is probably only going to involve the "driven gear". They're getting more difficult to find and certainly are more expensive but they are available.

Wheels are bent and will be replaced with something i get a steal on. (car has salvage title so its just for fun) Im sure larger than stock tire size.

Im swapping my rear, vette therapy for an engineer stuck in a office. Only plan so far is to drain the fluid while its out, replace one of the half shaft ujoints, and swap em.

Where is the driven gear? How do i get specs on what i need/part numbers?

Without the tire size you're going to use don't be concerned presently.

The VSS is on the transmission LH rear on the tail-shaft housing, it's very accessible so the change can wait.

The VSS will look like the one second from left in this image:

In this image it's the "white" part on the rear housing

Here's a chart that might help you out. Some VSS modules have offset shafts to accommodate larger gears (higher rear axle ratios). In this chart MD8 is the 700r4. I don't know what a ML9 is -- manual trans, I assume.
