Really basic (ie: stupid) head porting question
I just got the heads off my sisters 88 vert (head gasket) two nights ago and after I got in her ear about what she could do while they were off and getting checked and/or machined (where's that evil smiley :jester ) she is now considering some head work.
Here is the stupid part that I want to ask before we do anything further - when getting heads ported, one needs to know what came specs and capacity the motor will be running so the heads can be ported to suit - correct?
If the above is true, would head porting even be worth it if she sticks with the stock cam?
You can gain about 20-40 HP over the stock heads/cam if you basically port match the intake ports to the stock gasket, blend the bowl areas of both the intake and exhaust ports and back cut on the intake valves. This is the most basic form of porting that any shop can do, and it makes the biggest difference while keeping low rpm torque ( basically, do NOT hog out the runners or the drop in flow velocity will kill torque and grossly mismatch the heads to the stock cam )
If you are having the heads rebuilt anyway, it does not cost much more to get a 3 angle valve job, pocket porting, and gasket matching. If you have decided to stay with the stock cam, its not worth the extra cost to do any more work as the benefits will only be realized with a higher lift cam.
