Default A/C Compressor Question

If you have a compressor already removed form a car, is there any way to determine if it still good.
Reason I ask, is that I have an opportunity to buy one for my vette, real cheap. The only problem is, the guy has it out of the car. He is parting out an 84 vette and has no idea if the compressor is good.
Any ideas?

Not really. If the shaft turns easily, at least it's not seized. You can cover the suction and discharge ports and see if it builts pressure, but this hardly simulates operational conditions. If the oil is dark and thick (and there should be oil in it), moisture has gotten into the system and there could be corrosion. In fact, a good used compressor shouldn't be exposed to air at all, so hopefully the owner has it sealed up. Good rebuilders seal theirs and then pull a vacuum to dehydrate and leak test the unit. In most cases, used compressors are worthless. If you can get it for free or close to it, you can always try to rebuild it. At least put in a new shaft seal and gaskets, flush with whatever oil you're going to use and then try it out.

 Sounds as if I might save myself some potential headaches by buying a new one.
