This morning I went out and warmed up my car, before I took off for work I strolled around it just to make sure everything was cool. And to my suprise a small stream of thick oil running down the driveway and it began right under the differential! Ahhhh! I caught a ride with someone else. What usually goes out on the differential to make it leak? And how much will it cost/how hard to fix it? Thanks!
Leaking happens through the driveshaft/halfshaft seals(unless the carrier housing parts are loose, OR CATASTROPHIC failure of the housing has occured).
Repair of the halfshaft seals requires complete dissassembly of the differential. Something you should trust to a professional. You can however, if you are experienced enough, remove the differential unit yourself and save $$$. Mine cost about $275.00 (approx) to have a pro replace all seals and adjust the 'pre-load'. Good luck.
You will have to see where it is coming from, mine was leaking from the case. A bunch of case bolts were loose, re-torqued and no more leak. Might want to check that first.
Good luck.
