Hi - I have a 86 vert with an agravating problem. I am driving down the road, and turn on my lights, and the bell goes "ding ding ding" and on and on - forever, until I get tired of hearing it, and shut off the lights. Needless to say this limits my enjoyment of my car. Any ideas how to cut the wire to the bell? I don't want to actually fix it - unless it is a minor fix. If it entails tearing the dash apart, I am not really interested in fixing it - unless that is the only way. Thanks! PLEASE GO TO #20 FOR MY UPDATE ON THE PROBLEM.

If you wiggle the key in the ignition, does it stop for a while?
I will try that tomorrow. The car is at a shop. What does it mean if it does? Is the ignition switch bad? I have a brand new key, that I haven't used yet. Maybe I should try that, too?
Mine is a 93, and I have gotten the "ding ding ding" reminder when I leave the turn signals on for too long while driving straight. Maybe there is something wrong with your flasher.

I checked all the 3-5 amp fuses, and they were ok. I figured (perhaps incorrectly) that a bell would not use a 10 amp or higher fuse. Was I wrong?

My thought was that maybe the ignition contacts are loose or dirty causing the module to read that the key was removed with the lights on. It seems like if your gauges fuse was blown, something else wouldn't work. Doesn't cost anything to try a different key.
I, unfortunately, don't know squat about modules, etc. Which module are you referring to? And what would be the fix? to change the module, I imagine, right? I had a 59 that in 64 I pulled the motor out of it, and changed the short block - by myself. But that car was not a technological nightmare like this 86 is!

I took the vert to a shop that works on vettes. He pulled the front off the radio to locate the offending module. He also checked to make sure the lights under the hood weren't causing my problem. He told me the module was in a sealed box. Is there no easy way to cut the wires to this module, without screwing something else up? I don't want to trade one problem for another. Does anybody know? Do you KNOW somebody who knows? I talked to the vette mechanic at my local Chevy dealer. He has been working on vettes for 17 years and NEVER seen this issue before! Holy crap!!!
The chime circuit is pretty simple to diagnose where the problem is, when using the info in the link.
Did he use the info I gave you, or just dig in and bill you

He did not charge me for this problem. The problem I am having with the link is that I can't print it out. I tried for 1/2 hour - no luck. Is there NOBODY out there that has had this problem before? Is there NOBODY that can tell me how to disable the chime without screwing another system up? Being home before dark is a bummer! And who could listen to that chime for 1/2 hour or so? Not me!
