My car has 93K miles, and the clutch was replaced by Chevrolet at 45K (previous owner) (BTW, the Dealer had the DM Resurfaced!). I got the car at 60K. I just drive it around town spiritedly (6 fun filled shifting miles to work) Unfortunately, the clutch slips now even in 1st gear at full throttle. It had been going for a while, but I was babying it along.
I'm decidedly on the fence about what flywheel clutch combo to put in. So I think I've decided that I'm just going to take everything apart and see what everything looks like. Then I'll be forced to make a decision and actually buy something. I guess it's going to depend on the state of my DM flywheel and my budget. Three current options: (1) Cheapo clutch, (2) SPEC Stage 2 clutch, (3) SPEC Stage2 with Fidanza SM Aluminum Flywheel. (1) or (2) with DM flywheel, new or scuffed, depending on condition.
First, if anyone in Northern Virginia has a Single Mass flywheel installed with their ZF, I'd like to hear the rattle for myself.
Second, a while back I had seen online that someone posted a step-by-step instruction sheet on the clutch replacement procedure, but for the life of me, I can't find it now. Anyone have a link? Any specific hints or tips are appreciated.
I would do what he did... or consider Mcleod. I had more trouble with fitment with a SPEC Stage 1, than there is a right to... and they did not cover the problems, just blamed me for it... :mad
Re: Another Clutch Replacement Newbie (rockken_vette)
Dont laugh too hard but I got my clutch assembly at Advance Auto for about $350. It has a lifetime warranty on it too. I was not able to find anyone else who offered that. They use a Zoom brand. I'm serious when I say that I absolutly abuse the dog poopie out of mine and it takes it rather well. 1.90 sixty foot times are no sweat. I drove 700miles (roundtrip) made 7 passes on the autox course, 13 trips down the 1/4 mile. All in 36 hours. That was last year at the cruise in. This year I only autoxed it 3 times and only made 11 trips down the 1/4 mile. All on the same clutch.
If you plan on making BIG hp numbers then go with an aftermarket assembly but for the street and mild track use this one is fine.
Re: Another Clutch Replacement Newbie (red90sixspeed)
Yea, I'm leaning more and more towards something like the local parts store brand. I don't have or plan to have anything over 350HP in this car. I figure I might be at 320 now (NOT RWHP). I always thought I was good to my clutch, I don't abuse or slip it, and I try not to let my wife drive (slip) it :). But I thought 45K miles, even if only 30K was me driving, was not very good. I've replaced other clutches before, but never in the Vette. I'm not especially looking forward the project, thus all this stalling.
Does the Warranty cover Friction material too? If you take it back and say it's slipping, do thay just fork over a new one?

just as a note: You can't use the option in bold. Anything with a sprung hub you can't use on a dual mass flywheel. If using SPEC, gotta use a stage IV (or higher).
Why? The center springs/hub would rub the flywheel. NOT GOOD!
It is quite an ambitious undertaking, but it can go smooth if ya take a methodical, planned approach. Beware, there are some pitfalls once you start going with parts other than stock. That's where we come in :D Bwuaha ha ha haaa..... but seriously, you can do it and this Tech section will help you massively!!!
Re: Another Clutch Replacement Newbie (rockken_vette)
The warranty covers everything. Thats what they told me and I made sure to ask. When this one wears out I get to take it back and ask for a new one. I probally should have mentioned that it is a limited lifetime warranty meaning they will replace it only 1 time but still that still sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
Re: Another Clutch Replacement Newbie (rockken_vette)
Make sure the rear of the intake is not leaking oil down onto the clutch/clutch housing. Did my clutch myself. But the intake has been leaking so bad it ruined my new clutch. It slips.
