Default coolant temp sensor R&R ?

I have a 96 and I need to change the ECT sensor on the water pump. Do I have to drain out all the coolant first? Just wondering how much will come out when I remove it and certainly dont want to splash the opti. I recently put a new water pump in and just changed over the old sensor with it. Now I am getting a code and the temp goes haywire and the engine stumbles. Thanks

Changed mine recently, I didn't drain the coolant. Have the new one ready to go so you can put it in as soon as the old one comes out. very little leaked, just be quick.

It would provide more protection for the opti if a plastic bag was positioned over the opti held in place with rags jammed into the crevices.

As Pete919 suggested, be prepared to remove/replace in a organized movement.

Do not remove the surge tank cap, as this will slow the flow of coolant.

Make sure you have the correct replacement sensor by comparing the connector pins.

Have a beer, or two, for a job well done.

yeah, I plan on constructing an impenetrable fortress around the opti and I think i will have a beer or 2 first and then start. I need a little wrenching oil to really make things go smoothly.

Check the wiring insulation close to the sensor first. From moving it around when changing the pump they might be shorting.
