You have to remove the metal cap that holds the spring on to the sun visor shaft.
Kind of tricky.
What I did was use an adjustable painter pole, (short enough to fit within the bottom part of the sun visor shaft, and that allowed me to put ll th pessure I needed on the upper cap in order to get it to rotate and ome out. The upper part of the shaft has a bit of thread for the cap to cew in. You need to push down on the cap at the se time as you are trying to turn it.
If your new ones came with replacement caps, then don.t worry abot them getting messed up. you will need to hold the shaft from below in order to compress the sping and put the cap back on for reinstalation.
The sun visor shaft is not threaded on the early cars. The spring cap is held in place by a small clip that is pressed down over the shaft and fits in grooves in the shaft.
I pried the clip out with a wood chisel. It broke (fortunately I had a couple of spares):

I wanted to also remove the visor to do a custom repair on it. Never went to the effort of really trying to get it off. But in light of this information, I think I will just leave well enough alone.
I have already repaired a small ripped area on one of my visors. I think will do my repair work on the car even though it might be more difficult and not create additional problems for myself. It might not be as perfect but it will be a good job.
I just replaced bith of mine on my 93 vert. I had a threaded cap on the spring with a small nut on top of it. I removed the top nut, then used a small screwdriver to hold the cap while I rotated the visor 1/2 turn. Roatated the whole thing back then repinned for another 2/3 turn. It took awhile but it worked. I ordered all new parts for the replacement and used a small socket to drive the new cap down foar enough to start the new nut on the stem. Don't know if this will help any but worth a shot...
Just did a full visor replacement last night. The new visors came with new retainers so I just gently worked at prying them with a screwdriver until they popped off. Getting them back on is no picnic either.
