Is it a 'vented' opti? If so, the inlet side can get clogged, and then you're drawing up to 20+" of vacuum on the dist housing. Atmospheric pressure pushes in on the front (cap) of the housing and it rubs the rotor.
If it's not a vented opti, IDK what could or would cause that. Maybe it was arcing through to the ink traces inside the cap? IDK.
Was that water pump leaking from the bearing? there are some leak marks on the shaft and it looks like it could have gotten into the opti in that area? There is moisture right above the contact
It is a vented opti and I blew air threw the hoses and sprayed air in them to make sure they were clean too. But if a hose was blocked would it be the one from intake to the bottom of the opti, or the hose coming from the I guess the ribbed snorkel to the throttle body?
It didn't seem to have any oil inside the cap but it is rusty, need to pick up star set to open the other half of the opti to see inside there if its dry or not. If dry going to buy new cap & rotor for a spare opti..
If lines are clear now wonder if anything else could or would cause the cap to suck into the rotor? Don't want to do this job over any time soon..

Yes the bearing were all but falling out of the pump, I think not only little bit of oil got in but coolant did to, guess its what may have rusted the rotor cap, don't feel that normal with age??

IF a blocked hose caused the marks in your cap, it would be the hose from the distributor to the filtered air duct.
There is also a check valve on the vacuum line from the opti to the intake manifold. If this has failed, and it was not getting vacuum, there can be a build of gasses in the distributor which can cause cross arching, as I understand it. After seeing a youtube vid on the opti, I checked mine, and sure enough I had very little vacuum. Replaced my check valve and now when I pull hose from the air duct, I can hear it.
