I did the paper clip code reader on my 94 tonight to try and bring up why the check engine light came on after a new opti change. it only comes on for the first 2 mins after cold start up. then goes off it did this the last 2 days. so after getting into the menu I only got a code C12. after research that only means the engine is not running. is that right?

after I removed the paper clip I started the car and light never came on. did I clear the code by chance?

Try taking a look at the following link.

http://tech.corvettecentral.com/2011...trouble-codes/

It explains how to check codes, what they mean (make sure you look at the right section for your model year), and how to clear them.

A code showing as “C12” for the CCM module (module #1) means no codes are stored. So C12 is a good thing to see.

At the end of the referenced link, it explains how to clear the codes. Perhaps you did this while working with the codes?

Error code 12 is "no reference pulses from distributor". You get this when the engine is not running. It is used as a delimiter for the other codes.

The reason for this (and other code numbers -- why is code 32 used for two different things?) is another mystery lost in the mists of time...
