It's a very tight fit in there, and the plug wires used to rest against the EGR shield, and began to crack. I adjusted the looms a bit, and now part of the EGR shield has melted onto the wire loom, but it doesn't touch the wires anymore. Is it safe for them to be that close to one another? Anyone have any problems with cracking or whatnot?
Re: Does your EGR shield touch your plug wires? (FlyboyZR1)
2 of my wires burned when they contacted the EGR tube (no shield after rebuild). So if your shield is in bad condition the wires are in danger.
To fight this problem I installed individual heat shields to each wire (where they go under the EGR tube) plus a new EGR heat shield. I bought a pack of Thermo Sleeve which can take 2000 F and cut 2" pieces and slid them onto the custom wires I shortened to cerrect length (no slack).
No problems since.
My sig picture of the motor shows the wires without either shields and those were the wires that burned :mad

Toni,
Where did you happen to purchase the thermo sleeve, and how much was it? I've thought of wrapping some heat-what around the wires and maybe the EGR shield for better protection, but I hate to pay $50 for like 10 feet of wrap when all I need is 10". If you have any extra I'd be glad to pay you for maybe a foot or so. Thanks for the advice...

Well, I live in Europe so I think you might get the stuff locally easier ;)
The manufacturer seem to be Cool It Thermo Tec in Ohio. The product is named Thermo Sleeve and the product number is 14005. The box included 3 feet of 1/4" seamless fabric tube that is fire and oil resistant. There is several other part numbers for different diameters available.
I bought mine from my local speed shop so just ask around - I am sure you find it. Oh, the box says: "for a dealer near you call 1-800-274-8437" Hope this helps.
Thay also make that expensive exhaust wrap (and a dozen other thermo -products) you talk about but I think this box did cost something like 5-10 bucks.

Toni,
thanks for the help I found a couple places that carry it. Now as for the thermo-sleeve, did you have to remove the plug wires to put it on? I'm curious if it can slide directly onto the wire without having to remove it.
Re: Does your EGR shield touch your plug wires? (FlyboyZR1)
Yes you need to remove the wires, thermo sleeve is a fabric tube so you have to cut a piece and slide it on the wire from one end. The ones I used is very thin kind and you need to take the spark plug boots off too to get it on but there are bigger ones that should slide over the boots if you don't want to mess with them. Here is some numbers: 14010 (5/8" to 1"), 14015 (1 1/8" to 1 1/2"). The ones I used were 14005 (1/4" to 1/2").
I did my own wires so it was easy, well actually I forgot to put one sleeve on and I had to take the boot off and to put the sleeve on and then reinstall the boot onto the wire. What a pain in the azz ;)
Ask to see it before you buy so you can check out if the ones they are offering is big enough for you and will slip over the boot easily.

Are you talking about the foil covered wrap thing around the pipe where the EGR temp sensor is screwed into? I just bought a replacement one from Zip a few weeks ago. ~Juliet
Re: Does your EGR shield touch your plug wires? (FlyboyZR1)
They don't touch, but they're close. From the factory, the passenger side plug wires were shielded with 1/4 in. split wire loom. They also pass underneath an aluminum bracket which holds the wire loom clip and provides some protection from the EGR pipe. A boneyard is the only place I know of that would have the factory bracket. If you want to try the plastic loom, you need the high heat 600 degree plus stuff which is virtually impossible to find. It's identified by a white stripe and the loom sold at parts and electrical stores is junk. I believe I saw it at the Last Detail http://www.tld-corvette.com and I think Painless Wiring http://www.painlesswiring.com carries it also.
Re: Does your EGR shield touch your plug wires? (Juliet)
Juliet: no, actually we are talking about shielding each individual wire where they go close the egr tube and shield. I didn't have the EGR shield and burned wires and he did have it but still the wires were cracking near the tube.
When I burned the wires, it was middle of the night and I was in middle of nowhere. It took 3 hours for my friend to arrive to the rescue with some new wires. I decided never to burn wires again put a shield on each wire to be sure.

A performance shop is getting me some high-temp tape. Picture duct-tape with some high-temp silver coating on it. You can wrap it around the wires, EGR tube, or wherever you want. Hopefully it'll work out. Thanks for the help Toni.
