I have an '84 Vette with a chronic front end squeek problem. In an attempt to eliminate same I replaced the upper and lower ball joint and control arm bushings, stabilizer link bushings, and shock absorbers. The problem still exists. Other than the bushings for the leaf spring, there is nothing else to replace. Could that possibly be the problem? Dosen't seem like it because there is very little movement coming from that component. All new bushings were adequately greased when they were installed so I find it hard to believe that it could be coming from any of the replaced parts. I need help!!! Should I give up and just buy a good pair of earmuffs?
More then likely it is the spring, the rubber pads that are vulcanized to the spring have broken loose. The mounting area is about 24 in. in from the each spring end.
The squeaking (almost a groaning) coming out of my 84 was in fact the spring. I replaced it with one from VBS and the front end is now silent. It's something of a chore, but it was the only way to eliminate the noises. Dave

Thanks for your comments but I would like to be sure before I go ahead and replace it. Is there anyway I can do that? Can't tell by just looking at the leaf spring rubbers. Its so hard bouncing the car up and down while it's sitting still to get the squeek to squeek
Well, I diagnosed it through a process of elimination and actually feeling the spring as it moved. Not easy. You do want to be as sure as you can be due to the cost and the difficulty of the job.
I had the same problem and thought it was the a arm bushings but it turned out to be the sway bar. It was at the collar underneath where it bolts to the frame. I took off each piece and greased them up good, problem solved. I was going to put a grease fitting on but didnt have the time.
