I have a 1996 coupe, the drivers side window will not go up. The switch will work the passenger side window and it makes very faint clicking sound when when tring to put up drivers window. Is there any way to switch out the motor without taking out the entire regulator?

On my '88 it was necessary to remove the regulator/motor assy; I suspect the same is true for your '96.

Yeah you have to take the whole assembly out. The motor is riveted to the regulator at the very bottom. Now just have to find a regulator.

I replaced mine, and it wasn't that bad to do. You take the inside panel off. scribe the bolts so you don't get the adjustment out, you have to unhook a couple rods for the door handle etc. move the alum panel, unscrew the glass from the regulator and lower it into the door. The regulator is only held in with 4 bolts. The motor is riveted, but you drill them or grind them out and the new motor comes with new bolts.
There are some steps I know I forgot, but if you do a search, there was a pretty good write up with pictures on this forum.
It took me about 2hrs to do it, but I cleaned the regulator and re-greased it. After doing it once, you could do it again in less then a hour.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information, I did not know the new motor came with the bolts.

the motor could have a flat spot. before taking anything apart try holding the switch in the up pos while closing the door. if this doesnt work then you will need to insure that you have power going to the switch then away from the switch and to the motor. if these test are positive then try tapping on the motor while holding the switch. if this doesnt work it is time for a new motor.

I tapped on the motor while holding the switch up, it worked for a few cycles then quit again. Thats why I thought the motor was bad. I drilled out the rivets and did not realize the spring would unload. How do I rewind the spring so the new motor will line up with the gear wheel on the regulator?
