Shock absorber "upper retaining clip"

I have a late model '91 with selective ride control and I'm trying to change out the shocks. I can't seem to find the clip that removes the cover off of the top of the shock. Can anybody help?

You need one or you can't figure out "how to release" the actuator from the top of shock?

I can't figure out how to release it. That picture helps though. I think there's grease or dirt up there covering it up because I looked pretty extensively. Have anymore pictues? The more the better. I'm changing out all four tomorrow. Any hints or tips? It's my first time changing out shocks on any vehicle.
