Too hot!!!
Hey Guys:
Butt-kickin' day today in NJ. I believe it was hovering around 90's. On the slow, bumper to bumper drive home, my oil temp shows around 250s and the coolant temps shows around 240's. Once I get moving, the coolant goes to a around 220~230. This all seems too hot! Could my temp sensors be too old to read correctly? The car ran fine, it's the temp readings that's scaring me! Should a nice coolant flush be in the works for this coming weekend? Thanks for the input, fellas.
Have you looked to see the vacuum bag between your condensor and radiator is clogged? Check that first. Its free and only takes 30 minutes to disassemble everything. You may have to partially drain the coolant to get the hoses off to pull off the radiator shroud. You couls also have a stuck or worn out thermostat, but that takes a bit more to check. Good luck. :smash:
Just a bit high for traffic, the space in front of your radiator is prolly clogged up. Flush the radiator, clean off the front and add a bottle of water wetter. Should drop them by 15-20 degrees.
Only permanent fix would be a lower temp thermostat, id only go 180 in NJ if you have to drive it in winter, and either a fan switch or a chip burned to make your fans come on earlier.
Had the same problem with mine, it even went over 250 at Beech Bend Dragstrip and shut down the air while i was waiting in traffic. 30 minutes, a shop vac, and some hand tools and the problem has been gone for 3 years now. :yesnod: :yesnod:
Flush the system, pull the radiator, and clean the air intake area. Replace the thermostat. Use simple green to clean the exterior parts of the radiator. Soak the radiator and allow the cleaner to do its job. It will get years of road grime off.
The car will run much cooler. Don't forget to burp the system. I have heard that water wetter is an excellent additive to the cooling system, reducing the temps by 10-15 degrees. I have not first hand experience but heard good things.
All the other replies are good advise. I would change my oil soon if my 89 ran that hot. I try to keep fresh oil in mine; it's a cheap form of insurance, if you know what I mean. My vert has 112k on it and I still have over 50 psi oil at speed and over 40 psi oil at idle. I use 10-30 full syn. Valvoline. Also you didn't mention if you were sure both primary and aux. fans were running? Good luck!

My car used to run hot, then I to dexcool, added water wetter, 160* stat cutm y air lid and added a K&N. Now my car never gets hot anymore, it used to get up to 230 now it never gets above 210 in traffic.
