On an 86, is the main cooling fan 12v? Can i test it to see if it works with the key on and jump 12v from the battery to the fan?
Don't need the key on for that test
1st .check fan works by putting 12V and Neg direct to fan
2nd .check for 12V in at fan relay (red wire )
3rd .check wiring by jumpering the terminals on the fan relay ( red to red / blk ) fan should run
4th .key on check for 12v on the blue wire
It doesn't matter what you use. Most people use a paper clip. You can use a wire or a pair of pointed tweezers. The ALDL connector is above your right leg underneath the dash. It looks like this:
It might have a cover on it that just pulls off toward the rear of the car. Some people just leave the cover off. Mine has a cover on it in this pic (far right side of the picture):
