I'm wanting to purchase an Air Foil. I'm just wanting to know if it really works and is it worth the cost. I have also seen many types and would like to know which one works best. Thanks!

I put one in the 85 with a K&N and could feel no difference. I think it is only worth it for thre manufacturer. While at first the idea made some sense but then I questioned if there would be the same turbulence as the air comes out of the runners which I imagine would negate any smoother flow through the throttle body. If it worked you would think the manufacturer would include a copy of a dyno test with the foil or on the package?
Buy it.. :yesnod: For 30bucks you cant beat it.. If it diddnt work why does LPE, DRM, TPIS all use them?
Perhaps because they are part of a total package of improvements from front to back (intakt - motor - exhaust). And even then they are an insignificant part of the package, imho. But there is absolutely no value whatsoever to putting one on a totally stock car. None.
Edit: I still prefer to use it as a paperweight. Best part is that I got it free!
If you are trying to make a big difference, don't get one. The heads and cam make the horsepower. I think the more mods you have, the more difference they can make, but it will only show on a dyno. The racers use every edge they can get for competition, so every little bit helps. :seeya
The theory behind airfoil sounds rational and every aftermarket TB has one integrated. You can't feel it but it might help a little, even if it was just 2hp instead of 12 they advertise its quite cheap per hp. Compare that to the cool air kits they sell for $400-500 and with 10-15 hp advertised hp gain!
Anyway, I got mine free with my car so I'm happy with it ;)

Hey Scoob, is it for a 52 or 58 MM? and might you consider a trade for an equal or greater weighted paperweight? :D

If they don't tell you where in the power band those advertised gains are then I guarantee you that it isn't a gain on peak. More likely it is way out in the rpm range where it doesn't matter anyway. Don't be fooled by the advertisements.
i think the aftermarket companies just put those airfoils in their TBs and stuff because they're cheap and people think they're expensive and 'getting a deal' when that airfoil only cost them 25 cents to make anyway :jester

Re: Air Foil worth it? (9vette3)
9vette3,
Check out the results posted at http://www.ws6.com/mod-4.htm The guy's main page has a ton of detailed information where he has dynoed his Firebird as he made many mods to his car. He documents a 2.4 hp gain by using a TPIS air foil. As already stated, it sure isn't 12 hp like the claims.
I have an airfoil that I bought from another Forum member. It is the same as the one TPIS sells I believe. It slips into the throttle body and is held in place by the throttle body plastic air duct. It fits my 88 L98 with stock 48mm throttle body. I'm not sure if it would fit your 93. If you want to spend $25 I'll be glad to sell it to you.
I tried it and I find that the potential 2+ hp is nothing I can feel. If you race it might be that little "extra" that makes it worth the cost to you. Personally I do not feel that it is worth the cost for street use, but if you really want to give it a try, I'll be glad to sell it. Email me directly if interested.
Hey
When describing my car to my MOM its sounds very impressive to her, but she's close to 80
i.e What you do this weekend "Well Mom I installed a Throtle Bottle Bypass" her response "Well I'm very proud of you son, that sounds very difficult, but should you be spending all that money on that car, after all you can only 2 people in it"

Ps she still refuses to get in the car, says she may never be able to get out of it. Just because my father got stuck once :lol
