ZF6 Shifter Play at Pivot Point
I have the rubber top side shifter boot off for repair and found the source of my up/down shifter play. It looks like the stick is mounted at 2 points (front and back) on which access it can pivot left/right. Within these 2 points there is a small gap (maybe 1/8" at most) that seems to have opened up - from wear, missing shim or somethign else. I can nudge the stick and see the assembly slide around within that little gap before doing any actual work to shift the trans into 3 or 4. Is is possible to shim at these axis points? Can it be done from the topside or do I have to disassemble from beneath? If the latter its not worth the effort at this time, I'll wait for when it needs a new clutch since its really just a minor annoyance and doesnt seem detrimental in any way to the trans.
Also - any secret to getting the top rubber boot back on (the one held by the 4 acorn nuts)? I was careful removing it and it took a little muscle but just kinda popped out damage free, other than the prexisting tear at the top that I am in process of repairing and was teh purpose of removal. I've read about big zip ties securing it, but is that for the lower boot? I saw no such thing for the upper.
One other thing that was weird is that with the hole in the top boot (and the console removed) I would get a lot of hot air/wind coming in through the tear. Wouldn't the lower boot still seal off that outside air? If so, seems like I might have a break in the lower boot as well that needs looking into.
thanks!
