Default Rack and Pinion

Help, I need to know if the rack and pinion for a 1988 and 1986 are interchangeable. My current rack is leaking and I do not want to rebuild it, besides, there is no one in town that can as well. I have searched all of the local parts stores, and no one can get me a rack. I have searched online and found them, but it is going to cost me an arm and a leg to ship my core back. However, I found one that I can do a store pick up in McDonough, Ga. The only problem, is the one they have shows for a 1988 and I need a 1986. I feel as though they are but not certain. Anyone out there know?

I just had mine rebuilt by Turn One Steering. They have an excellent reputation. www.turnone-steering.com

I've heard mixed reviews on purchasing rebuilt units.

'86 and '88 are NOT interchangeable.

I find it hard to believe that there's not an auto parts store that can help you local. Do you have NAPA, Carquest or Federated in the vicinity? Maybe Oreilleys? They would certainly need to order it I believe but it seems it should be doable. They will need to put some effort into it I'd think but doable!

The turn-one option is certainly there and might be the "preferred" but you might want to check on turn-around for yours once they receive it.
